What We Do

TRANSITIONS ORPHAN ASSISTANCE FOUNDATION has had a very hands-on, very personal mission in Odessa, Ukraine for seven years. Our goal is to build relationship with orphans through physical, emotional, medical, educational and spiritual assistance. Currently, Transitions facilitates, participates in, and funds several programs and projects:

The Graduate Program, our main project, started nearly four years ago when a group we had been working with at Orphanage #4 aged out of the orphanage and essentially had no one to turn to for help and guidance. We decided to continue in relationship with them, to mentor and assist. We host mid-week dinners at our homes where we cook together and work on life skills, including budgeting, and assist as necessary with expenses for food, clothing, toiletries, and medical needs, birthday and holiday celebrations, social and cultural experiences, and education. We nurture spiritual growth by encouraging attendance at a church of their choice, and each Sunday after church, we gather together for lunch.

The Backpack Project was developed three years ago to help newly emancipated orphans through their first month or two of independence while they wait for government stipends to begin. Each September, those who graduate or age out from Orphanage #5 and Pishana Orphanage receive a backpack filled with food, dishes, toiletries, and educational supplies, along with an invitation to join our Graduate program.

We support a home for orphan graduate boys which sponsors weekend visits and camping trips for kids at Orphanage #5 which, in turn, encourages them to choose to live at House of Hope after aging out of the orphanage. We support these activities with financial help and personal visits.

Homes for Orphan Graduates is a new project in 2014. We are currently seeking funds to build small homes for young men who have lived at House of Hope while they completed post-secondary education, and who would otherwise have no means of attaining housing without our help. We are currently building homes that we will be available on a rent-to-own basis to young adult orphans.

We support alternatives to adoption for older orphans. The United States will not allow adoption of any child who is the age of sixteen or older; therefore, we have been seeking alternative arrangements. Canada permits educational and work visas through family sponsorships. We assist our older orphans in finding these opportunities. We also assist graduates who wish to immigrate to other countries where they have family or relatives and would achieve a better, safer lifestyle.

On a monthly basis, we participate in a program for the orphans in the orphanage in the village of Pishana. The program there is four hours long, including a large group time, small groups with consistent leaders, and developmentally appropriate play stations. We also give birthday and holiday gifts and provide other necessities as needed.

Similarly, we support Summer Orphan Camps with our finances and personal visits which include games and English lessons. We provide birthday cards and gifts, toiletries, and clothing on as as-needed basis.

Transitions Orphan Assistance Foundation is able to provide these services and programs only through donations. Your dollars change lives. If you wish to help or would like more information, please contact us.
